CAIRO , March 3, 2018 - The Head of the United Nations Office of Counter-terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, starts a visit to Egypt Saturday at an invitation from the Egyptian government. Voronkov is expected to spend two days here, during which he will hold meetings with a host of government officials, including Interior Minister Magdi Abdel Ghaffar, Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, Ehab Fawzi, and Assistant Defense Minister for International Cooperation Mohamed el-Keshki. The senior UN official will also meet, according to a statement by the UN Media Office in Cairo, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayyeb and Assistant Arab League Secretary General Hossam Zaki. The talks between Voronkov and the officials he would meet in Cairo, the UN Media Office added, would dwell on the growing threat of terrorism and means of boosting international cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the light of international law and the counter-terrorism strategy of the UN. The UN Office of Counter-terrorism was founded in June 2017 to create the necessary command for implementing the UN counter-terrorism strategy and bolstering international coordination and cooperation in this regard.
