Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has affirmed that a political path with the participation of all components of the Syrian people is the cornerstone of achieving sustainable stability in the country. During a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shaibani, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Abdelatty stressed the need to preserve Syria's unity and ensure the restoration of its full sovereignty over its territory, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement. "Egypt views the restoration of Syria's well-being and its natural role within its Arab and regional surroundings as a fundamental goal that enhances Arab national security," Abdelatty said, highlighting the importance of continuing counter-terrorism and extremism efforts. The Egyptian minister renewed his "categorical rejection of the repeated Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty," warning of the danger of attempts to exploit the current situation to justify external interventions. He affirmed that Egypt, in its regional and international contacts, continues to stress the need to respect Syria's full unity and sovereignty. His comments came as Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in an address to the UN General Assembly, spoke of "Israeli threats" against Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime last December. Al-Sharaa, the first Syrian president to address the UN in 58 years, said that "Israeli policies are acting contrary to the international position that supports Syria and its people in an attempt to exploit the transitional phase, which exposes the region to entering a new spiral of conflicts." Al-Sharaa said Syria is "using dialogue and diplomacy to overcome this crisis" and pledged its commitment to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. He said that after the fall of the previous regime, Syria has "transformed from a country that exports crises into a historic opportunity to bring stability, peace, and prosperity to Syria and the entire region." He also pledged to bring "all those whose hands are stained with the blood of the innocent to justice."
