Arab, global rejection of Trump's Gaza takeover plans
Published in Daily News Egypt on 05 - 02 - 2025

US President Donald Trump's recent announcement proposing that the United States take control of the Gaza Strip after resettling Palestinians elsewhere has sparked widespread condemnation across the globe. Countries and international organizations have expressed their firm rejection of any plan to displace Palestinians from their land, reiterating their commitment to the two-state solution and the right of Palestinians to live in an independent state.
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) swiftly rejected Trump's proposal, calling the idea of US control over Gaza "ridiculous and absurd."
The Arab League also voiced its opposition, stating on Wednesday that Trump's plan would exacerbate instability and undermine efforts to implement the two-state solution. The League condemned the proposal as an attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians, stressing that it violates international law and is opposed both by the Arab world and the international community.
China's representative to the UN Security Council echoed these concerns, expressing his country's opposition to any attempts to alter the demographic composition of the occupied Palestinian territories.
In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated support for the Palestinians, affirming their right to return to their homes and rebuild Gaza. He emphasized that his country will continue advocating for a two-state solution.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, also condemned Trump's plan, stating that the forcible deportation of Palestinians from the occupied territories is a clear violation of international law. He reaffirmed that the right to self-determination is a cornerstone of international law and must be respected by all nations.
Scottish Prime Minister John Swinney denounced any attempt to expel Palestinians, calling it dangerous and unacceptable. He reiterated that peace can only be achieved through the establishment of two states, with no room for ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock similarly condemned the idea, stating that Gaza, like the West Bank and East Jerusalem, is Palestinian territory. She warned that the expulsion of Palestinians would lead to further suffering and hatred, emphasizing that such actions would be contrary to international law.
