Wizz Air, Europe's fastest growing airline and the Middle East's leading ultra-low-cost airline, announced expanding its Middle East network with a new route from London Luton Airport to Egypt's Sphinx International Airport in Cairo. The new route, which will start on October 30, will operate three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The company said in a Wednesday statement that the addition of the new route to Cairo's Sphinx International Airport is part of Wizz Air's commitment to expanding ultra-low-cost travel in the Middle East. The airline recently announced exciting new routes from Rome, Milan, and Budapest to Sphinx International Airport, and from London and Milan to Hurghada. The main goals of Sphinx International Airport are to reduce congestion at Cairo International Airport (which served 13 million passengers before the Covid-19 crisis) and ease city traffic. Additionally, the airport aims to make several nearby historical sites more accessible to tourists. These include the new Great Egyptian Museum of Giza, which will soon open on the outskirts of Greater Cairo. Furthermore, the airport will make transportation to the Red Sea resorts, especially Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, easier. The new Sphinx International Airport is expected to relieve congestion at Cairo International Airport, promote one-day tourism, and improve transportation of goods. It is approximately an hour's drive from downtown Cairo and two hours from Cairo International Airport. The airport will primarily serve residents of the Greater Cairo districts of 6 October and Sheikh Zayed, as well as the governorates of Fayoum and Beni Suef.
