Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam witnessed on Monday the signing of an agreement between the Regional Training Center of the Ministry and the CIHEAM Bari Institute.
The agreement aims to implement the Italian-Egyptian Water Training Programme – Water Knowledge, which is presented as a grant from the Italian side with a value of €2.30m.
The agreement was signed by Tarek El-Sayed, the head of the Regional Training Center, and Biagio Di Terlizzi, Deputy Director at CIHEAM-Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM Bari).
During the signing ceremony, Sewilam stated that this project is one of the areas of cooperation with the Italian side in the field of water, with the aim of building capacities, raising the efficiency of workers in the water sector and exchanging experiences and knowledge to reach an integrated approach to water management, by strengthening infrastructure and technology and improving the quality and efficiency of the training process at the regional training centre to become a leading training agency in Egypt and Africa.
The minister pointed to the importance of supporting the training programs offered to the technical cadres of young engineers and researchers in the ministry in all areas related to the optimal management of water resources, especially in light of the negative effects of climate change, and providing training topics that qualify engineers for modern management of water resources and adaptation to climate changes.
He highlighted Egypt's readiness to become a regional hub in the continent for the African countries in the field of capacity building in issues related to water and climate change.
Sewilam further added that the objectives and outputs of this project fall within the Egyptian National Strategy for Sustainable Development 2030, and benefit from the Egyptian ministries of irrigation, agriculture, housing, electricity and environment, Egyptian universities and research institutes, as well as the African countries.
