Egypt's FM stresses need to provide climate finance to developing countries During his speech, Shoukry discussed Egypt's vision for the COP27 as well as the most prominent topics on the agenda of the conference.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry — in his capacity as the President-Designate of the upcoming UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) — delivered a speech virtually as part of his participation at the opening of the Caribbean Regional Meeting on Climate Change in the Bahamas on Tuesday. During his speech, Shoukry discussed Egypt's vision for the COP27 as well as the most prominent topics on the agenda of the conference. He also reiterated Egypt's goals for the conference, which is to move from making pledges towards actual on the ground implementation by mobilising the necessary support for global climate action, noting the great importance of climate finance as a main driver of climate action. The FM particularly highlighted the need to work to provide climate finance to developing countries — including island states — in such a way that they can fulfil their pledges, taking into account that they are the most affected by the consequences of climate change despite contributing the least to emissions. He also stressed the need to consolidate the efforts of various parties in order to implement climate pledges, which is what the Egyptian presidency of the conference is keen to communicate with all parties concerned with international climate action.
