Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry met with United Nations (UN) Special Envoy to Libya, Jan Kubiš, on Sunday, to discuss developments in the Libyan crisis and ways to reach a political solution.
Ahmed Hafez, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Shoukry reviewed Egypt's efforts to achieve a political settlement in the neighbouring country.
The minister stressed the need to complete the current political process, by holding a meeting of the House of Representatives to discuss the formation of the government.
He emphasised the importance of holding elections in accordance with constitutional rules, and as scheduled on 24 December 2021.
Shoukry also called on all parties to commit themselves to implementing the terms of the ceasefire agreement, particularly with regard to the removal of foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya.
It is important to counter any attempts that would hinder the unification of Libyan security institutions or perpetuate division in the country, Shoukry reiterated.
Hafez added that the minister also reviewed Egypt's efforts to advance the economic process, which led to a package of measures that would be implemented in the interests of the Libyan people.
Shoukry also stressed the need for economic reforms to go hand-in-hand with the effective political framework, to ensure that a comprehensive settlement of the Libyan crisis is advanced.
For his part, Kubiš briefed Shoukry on the results of his contacts with various parties concerned with the Libyan crisis.
He reviewed his vision on moving the various tracks, praising Cairo's position in support of a political solution in Libya.
Kubiš also expressed his aspiration for continued pace of coordination and cooperation between Egypt and UN in this domain.
