A 1.01 million Egyptian citizens have registered in the comprehensive healthcare insurance system under the early stages of Universal Health Insurance Law (2/2018) in in Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, South Sinai, Luxor, and Aswan governorates, the Ministry of Health said in a Tuesday statement.
This came four months after the start of the experimental stage's first phase which was launched in July this year in Port Said.
Assistant Health Minister and the health insurance project's chief Ahmed El Sobky said in a statement that 527,132 Egyptians have registered in Port Said through 29 health units and family health centres, 207,267 citizens registered in Ismalia, 48,344 in Suez, 127,088 in Luxor, and 11,897 in South Sinai.
El Sobky added that the health insurance system managed to carry out 8,995 surgeries in Port Said, including 611 operations that were conducted for the first time in the city.
“The political leadership is keen on offering citizens special health services that follow the international standards," he added.
Earlier in July, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly launched the new comprehensive healthcare insurance system in Port Said governorate to offer better health services to its citizens.
Madbouly said the governorate will be the first to benefit from the new system throughout 11 general and specialised hospitals and 32 healthcare units.
In December 2017, the parliament approved the comprehensive healthcare insurance system bill, which is expected to be implemented in six stages and may take until 2032 to be fully finalised.
