Egypt reviews electrical connection studies with Cyprus to begin project implementation
Studies are being conducted to increase capacity of electrical connection line with Jordan to take it up to 3,000MW

The Ministry of Electricity is reviewing the feasibility studies of the electrical connection project with Cyprus in order to begin implementing the project this year.
Mohamed Shaker, the minister of electricity, said that coordination is currently taking place with officials from Cyprus in order to evaluate the studies of the electrical connection project. While, he provided answers to the technical questions raised regarding the landing points and the paths of the electric cables.
He explained that the project is part of Egypt's strategic plan to achieve economic development and secure energy. It helps connect Egypt to the European electric grid, making Egypt a regional hub for energy exchange.
He added that implementing the project enhances the partnership between Egypt and Cyprus, and gives advantages to both countries, taking into consideration the latest developments in the sector of energy and increasing the available capacities, alongside with the expectations of an increased demand on electrical energy based on the development requirements.
This came during the meeting of the Ambassador of Cyprus, Charis Moritsis, with Shaker in order to discuss the recent updates of the electrical connection project.
Moreover, he pointed out to the importance the sector gives to the electrical connection project as Egypt effectively participates in similar regional projects. Egypt is electrically connected to its neighbouring countries from the east and the west through Jordan and Libya.
Currently, feasibility studies are being conducted in order to increase the capacity of the electrical connection line with Jordan in order to take it up to 3,000MW instead of 450MW through a connection on high voltage direct current (HVDC).
There is also a study for electrical connection from the south in order to benefit from the major potential of hydropower in Africa, especially that the electrical connection between the north and south of the Mediterranean will accommodate the major energies produced from clean energy.
