Cairo's Criminal Court headed by judge Gafaar Negm adjourned on Saturday the trial of two policemen, accused of killing a detainee, to 11 November to hear the defence's argument and to issue a final verdict. The detainee, Mohamed Abdel Hakim, known as Afroto, reportedly died in the Mokattam police station on 5 January. During the session, the court viewed the report of the Tripartite Commission of Forensic Medicine after medical examination of the victim's body found that he died as a result of sustaining severe injuries. Hours after the death of the detainee, several pro-state newspapers reported that Afroto died, due to a drug overdose, citing security officials who denied that he was assaulted. Commenting on this, the forensic report confirmed that the examination showed that the ratio of tramadol in his organs was 2.0% and Strox 9.0%, which could not cause death. The prosecution previously said that the two policemen—one the assistant to the director of the investigation bureau in the police station, and the other a lower ranking police officer—held pre-emptively accountable in the case, are facing charges of assaulting Afroto, injuring him, and possibly causing his death.
