Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry received Sunday recently appointed UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salama in Cairo, briefing him on the latest Egyptian efforts in resolving the Libya crisis.
Shoukry, who has been discussing the situation with different Libyan parties, stressed on Sunday the importance of Al-Skhirat agreement as a base of the comprehensive political settlement in Libya.
Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zaid reported in a statement that Shoukry briefed the UN envoy on Egypt's view towards the last security and political updates in the Libyan affair, and the possible challenges which Egypt may face if amid the security chaos in Libya.
Shoukry further learned about the results of Salama's meetings with the Libyan parties, as well as those of his communications with the international and regional parties concerned in the Libyan crisis.
The two sides discussed also how to build on the results of the meeting of the two main rivals in conflict-ridden Libya, Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj and the Military Commander Khalifa Haftar, hosted in a western suburb of Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron, last month.
Shoukry briefed the UN envoy on the Egyptian manoeuvrers and efforts to boost reconciliation including his meetings with the Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj and the Military Commander Khalifa Haftar in Paris in 26 July, and his meeting with Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in 25 July in Brussels.
Also, Shoukry briefed Salama on the results of meetings with Barqa and Misrata delegations which were held by Egypt's army chief-of-staff, General Mahmoud Hegazy in 3 July.
Abu Zaid added that Shoukry asserted in the meeting that the future arrangements should include serious steps to restoring the Libyan unity and activating the Libyan institutions.
He also pointed out to the importance of the role of the UN in following the implementation of Al-Skhirat agreement, expressing Egypt's keenness on more consultation and coordination with the UN in the Libyan crisis.
Salama praised the Egyptian role in resolving the Libyan crisis and its efforts to activate the political course through the peaceful solution and dialogue between all parties in Libya, the statement read.
The meeting comes in the context of efforts to achieving the settlement in Libya. The two sides asserted the necessity of continued co-ordinations and consultations between Egypt and the United Nations to restore stability and security to the Libyan territories, according to the statement.
Violence has outraged in Libya since 2011, when a popular uprising ended with the ousting and death of former President Muammar Gaddafi. Since the ousting of Gaddafi the country has rival governments and parliaments in the west and east.
