The parliament's Disciplinary Committee, headed by Bahaa El-Din Abou Shoka, concluded investigations of member of parliament (MP) Elhamy Agina, recommending withdrawal of his membership, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram. Agina faced investigations over two different incidents related to his statements during various parliamentary sessions. The first incident was when Agina criticised the parliament's performance in holding the government accountable, accusing it of giving in to it. Meanwhile, the second incident occurred in September when Agina made controversial statements regarding female genital mutilation (FGM). He stated that females should undergo the procedure due to the sexual weakness of Egyptian men. Concerning the first incident, the committee recommended dropping his membership in parliament, as it saw his statements as insulting to the parliament and violating membership rules. The recommendation will be referred to the legislative committee, which will decide the issue. Regarding his FGM statements, the committee recommends to prohibit him from participating in the parliament's work until the end of the current legislative stage. Previously, after his statements about FGM, several MPs and activists called for the revocation of Agina's membership in the parliament. His comments have stirred national and international outrage.
