CAIRO: The foreign ministers of Egypt and Burkina Faso spoke Sunday about an angry protest in Cairo last week and the subsequent arrest of 35 students, a Foreign Ministry statement said. In the telephone call, Burkina Faso s Foreign Minister Youssouf Ouedraogo expressed his gratitude for the firm way the Egyptian authorities dealt with those who caused the unrest, according to the statement. About 30 students from Burkina Faso carried out acts of violence and sabotage at their country s embassy in Cairo to protest an increase in fees that the embassy collects to certify their documents, the statement said. It provided no date for the protest. The Egyptian police intervened after receiving written permission from the ambassador of Burkina Faso, the statement said. Some arrests were made, it added. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the media, said about 50 students took part in the riots on Friday and that about 35 of them were arrested. The discrepancy in numbers could not be immediately reconciled. The Burkina Faso minister told Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit that the necessary measures be taken against those arrested in accordance with the Egyptian law, the statement said. AP
