President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met Tuesday with a delegation from the Anglican Church in the United Kingdom (UK), during their visit to Egypt to attend the conference of the Anglican Global South.
Presidency spokesperson Alaa Youssef issued a statement in which he said that the delegation included a number of bishops and archbishops, along with two members of the British parliament.
The meeting addressed ways to enhance international efforts to disseminate tolerance and acceptance, also to combat extremism and violence.
Al-Sisi stated during the meeting that Egypt adheres to principles of citizenship and is committed to enhancing a culture of pluralism and acceptance of the other. The president also denied that there is any religious discrimination in Egypt and said that all citizens enjoy the same rights.
During the meeting, Al-Sisi disclosed Egypt's efforts to rectify the religious discourse and eliminate the misconceptions that lead to violence and extremism.
The delegation praised Egypt's efforts that uphold the principles of citizenship and calls for tolerance and coexistence. Al-Sisi also said during the meeting that Egypt is committed to the principles called for by Islam, and it aims to present a message to humanity in terms of justice, cooperation, and tolerance.
Egypt has been hit by a string of sectarian strife incidents over the past few months, particularly in Minya governorate, where clashes erupted between Muslims and Christians.
