Court releases press advocate Amr Badr on bail
Badr was arrested along with journalist Al-Saqa when security forces stormed the Press Syndicate in an unprecedented move

The Cairo Criminal Court decided on Sunday to release detained Yanair Gate editor-in-chief Amr Badr on EGP 5,000 bail after his appeal was accepted, according to lawyer Khaled Ali.
Badr had appealed the decision that saw his detention renewed and extended on Wednesday. This was the ninth time his detention had been renewed since he was arrested on 1 May 2016 after security forces stormed the Press Syndicate.

Badr was arrested along with journalist Mahmoud Al-Saqa on charges of inciting protests and attempting to overthrow the regime. The two began a sit-in in front of the Press Syndicate headquarters in late April, to show their opposition to the security raids on their private residences; security forces had confiscated their belongings such as cameras and laptops.
The police stormed the Press Syndicate to arrest the two journalists, saying Badr and Al-Saqa were using it as a shelter despite an arrest warrant issued against them. Following this incident, journalists held protests in front of the syndicate calling for a presidential apology and dismissal of the Minister of Interior.
