A government security guard was killed Monday in a drive-by shooting that targeted a traffic checkpoint on the Ring Road in Giza.
The Ministry of Interior said Monday that the checkpoint falls under the jurisdiction of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges.
A security source told Daily News Egypt that the attackers purportedly mistook it for a security checkpoint.
"A martyr's compensation will be issued to the family of the deceased and he will receive a ‘semi military' funeral," Head of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges General Adel Turk said.
The employee killed, Mohamed Safaa, was a security guard, Governor of Giza General Alaa Al-Harras said. Two assailants drove a motorcycle into the checkpoint and opened fire, killing the employee and injuring another with 14 bullets, while the third was left unharmed. The injured employee is in critical condition and is hospitalised in Al-Haram Hospital
A team from the General Prosecution investigated the crime scene and the Forensic Medicine Authority will perform an autopsy on the body of the deceased.
Security forces have created security check points in the vicinity of the attack. No militant group has claimed responsibility yet. Ajnad Misr, one of the most active militant groups in Greater Cairo, and "Sinai Province", primarily active in North Sinai, are among the most likely groups to claim the attack.
Hundreds alleged members of the two groups are currently standing trial in Egyptian courts on terrorism-related charges.
Drive-by shootings targeting police and army personnel have become relatively frequent in Egypt since the ousting of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in June 2013.
