Investment projects in transportation sector total $3.5bn: Transport minister

Current investment projects in the transportation sector now total $3.5bn, with particular focus in the field of maritime transport, roads and railways, according to a Monday statement by the Ministry of Transportation.
In a statement highlighting progress in the sector since the formation of the interim government last summer, Minister of Transportation Ibrahim El-Demeiry said that 76 railway crossings had been completed in the governorates of Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Kafr El-Sheikh and Gharbeya. He added that the ministry had completed the development of railway stations in Zefta, Desouk and Tal Al- Kabir.
Also noted were development projects in the underground transportation sector, 12 of 17 of which having so far been completed, according to El-Demeiry.
The minister also announce the completion of a number of projects in the construction of roads and bridges with total lengths of 175km. This includes the paving of the 85km road that links Toshka and Arkin, also paving the Sidi Salem and Sidi Khamees and the road linking Cairo and West Assiut.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Transportation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chinese government to cooperate on a new $800m railway electric traction station that will connect Bilbeis City, Sharqeya, and El-Salam City in Greater Cairo.
