Cairo launches electronic payment service for car licences
Published in Daily News Egypt on 12 - 02 - 2014

In coordination with Fawry payment service, the Central Traffic Department and Cairo Traffic Department launched on Monday a service allowing car owners to electronically pay the required fees for obtaining or renewing a car licence.
This service will allow citizens to obtain their car license directly from traffic units skipping several procedures except the technical examination process, Medhat Koretam, aide to the Minister of Interior and director of Central Traffic Department, said in a press conference on Monday.
Head of Cairo Traffic Department Hassan El-Berdisi explained that car owners will pay their fees through Fawry outlets, and within 48 hours will be able to receive their licence from traffic units in process taking 15 minutes.
"Car owners have to enter their national identification number in the payment machine, then the system will automatically show the value of cash needed," said El-Berdisi, adding that users has the option whether he will pay in cash or through his credit card.
After the payment process, a bill will be automatically printed, El-Berdisi added.
The new service comes in line with plans from Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim to facilitate traffic services through new technological applications, a statement from Cairo Traffic Department said.
In the coming months, the service will be extended to delivering the licence to the car owner, El-Berdisi said.
The service is effective at Nozha traffic unit in Heliopolis, which serves 100,000 car owners, and will include all traffic units in Cairo in weeks, to serve 1.3 million car owners.
"By the end of 2014, the service will be available in all governorates," the statement said. "This service will lessen the traffic intensity in Cairo [by] reducing the amount of people who need to go themselves to traffic units [to acquire a licence]."
"All Fawry outlets, which include 4,000 ATM machines, 1,300 post offices and a number of retail stores, will offer the service," El-Berdisi added.
Fawry is a payment service available through banks, post offices and retail stores allowing users to electronically pay their bills.
