Viber spreads to desktop platforms

Viber is seeking to challenge Skype's dominance in providing internet call services by expanding its service to include a desktop version of the application, Viber Desktop.
The move came after Viber announced on Tuesday that its number of users recently rose to 200 million across 193 countries, compared to 140 million at the end of 2012.
Microsoft-owned Skype currently boasts a total of 600 million users.
Until now, Viber has provided users with free phone call and text message services on iOS and Android smartphones, allowing them free phone calls and messaging via mobile or Wifi connections.
The company is now seeking to expand its market to include personal computers by switching the mobile-only services over to desktop users through Viber Desktop, which will also feature desktop video calls.
