Mekki files report against Essam Sultan to prosecution

Minister of Justice Ahmed Mekki filed a report to the prosecutor general against Essam Sultan, deputy chairman of the Al-Wasat Party.
In a press conference for the Conscience Front held last Tuesday, Sultan accused unnamed judges of accepting bribes. Al-Wasat Party is a member of the Conscience Front.
In the report, Mekki requested that Sultan presents all evidence he possesses regarding his accusations, reported state-owned Al-Ahram. If the evidence proves the existence of a crime, Mekki requested that the prosecutor general takes the necessary measures to deal with it. If it turns out that Sultan just committed a disciplinary violation, the matter should then be referred to the Ministry of Justice.
The minister stated that Sultan's allegations, if true, would shake up the nation's confidence in the judiciary. He also said that the allegations are inappropriate as judges are not provided with the opportunity to defend themselves.
Sultan was unavailable for comment, and the Al-Wasat Party could not confirm Mekki's report. Abdel Aziz Mahmoud, media official at the party, stated that the matter is personal to Sultan, and refrained from responding.
During the press conference, the Conscience Front also called for the resignations of Minister of Information Salah Abdel Maqsoud and Mekki.
