Muslim Brotherhood denies torturing political activists
Published in Daily News Egypt on 11 - 02 - 2013

The Muslim Brotherhood denied claims that its members were present during the alleged torture of Mohamed El-Gendy.
El-Gendy was found in a coma in a hospital by his family three days after he disappeared from protests on 28 January. He died soon afterwards, amid claims that he had been captured and tortured to death by the police, whereas the hospital claims he was transferred from a car accident.
A person using an alias appeared on the Al-Nahar TV channel on Saturday, claiming that he belonged to the Brotherhood and was present during the torture of El-Gendy. He stated he, among other Brotherhood members, was called to the Gabal Ahmar state security camp “to assist the police in arresting the protesters”.
“There is no genuine accusation until this man files a complaint to the prosecutor general,” said Alaa Ayad, head of the Freedom and Justice Party's (FJP) media office. “His statement doesn't make any sense. He doesn't even mention his name or the names of those who asked him to go to the camp.”
Brotherhood spokesperson Yasser Mehrez told state-run Al-Ahram that the Brotherhood will sue the unidentified person for false accusations.
The Brotherhood, alongside the FJP, also denied any complicity in the case of kidnapping and torturing political activist Mohamed Gamal in Gharbeya. In a statement released on Monday, the Brotherhood and FJP said “that is not the manner with which we treat our opposition”.
“We value the opposition and any constructive differences,” the statement read.
Gamal, a 6 April Youth Movement member in Mahalla, was found Thursday morning showing “signs of torture", according to the group. The movement also reported that the victim claimed that members of the Muslim Brotherhood were behind his abduction.
