Attempts to bring calm to Alexandria after second death
Published in Daily News Egypt on 23 - 11 - 2011

ALEXANDRIA: Al-Wasat Party and Justice Mahmoud El-Khodairy said Wednesday they will form a human shield between protesters and the security directors, to prevent the clashes that erupt there every night.
Negotiations have managed to bring calm to Mohamed Mahmoud Street in Cairo after about 100 continuous hours of clashes between protesters and the police.
The new initiative in Alexandria — planned in coordination with Northern District military leadership—aims to put to rest daily clashes that erupt at about 8 or 9 pm. The military had barricaded the streets leading to the security directorate with barbed wire and armored vehicles.
On Tuesday, clashes were reignited outside the Alexandria security directorate in Semoha for the fourth day, spilling over to the early hours of Wednesday. One person was killed, bringing the death toll in Alexandria to two.
Doctors in field hospital said that the protester was shot dead in the head with a bullet not identified yet.
Deputy Health Minister in Alexandria Dr Salama Abdel Moneim identified the victim as Sherif Samy Abdel Hamid, 38. He said 27 were injured that night.
Teargas canisters were thrown from the buildings next to the security directorate and from inside the security cordon surrounding the directorate. Dozens of cases of teargas suffocation were treated at the field hospital.
Other injuries included rubber bullet wounds during the battle where protesters used stones and Molotov cocktails against the security forces.
Reports of the arrest of a doctor in the field hospital remain unconfirmed. Witnesses claim that Dr Ihab Mohamed was arrested while other physicians in the field hospital denied anyone was arrested during the clashes.
Tuesday's clashes escalated at 8 pm as thousands of protesters angered by the speech of Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi marched to the directorate raising their shoes in the air and chanting against the military rule.
Political forces criticized the speech in a demonstration in Victor Amanoal Square. Al-Wafd Party spokesperson considered it as deceiving, while political expert Abdel Fattah Mady said it was the same as Mubarak's speeches.
On Wednesday evening, hundreds marched from Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque towards the Northern District military leadership headquarters.
