Pro-Bahrain, Algeria, Libya solidarity march sees low turnout
Published in Daily News Egypt on 17 - 02 - 2011

CAIRO: Nearly a dozen protesters gathered Thursday afternoon outside the Algerian embassy in Zamalek in a show of solidarity with the uprisings of the people of Libya, Bahrain and Algeria.
The protest saw a low turnout though it was announced on Facebook a few days earlier.
Organizer Maisara Omar, a child development trainer, told Daily News Egypt that the low turnout did not deter him.
“I would protest alone if I had to,” he said.
The protesters chanted "Freedom...freedom for the peoples of the Arab countries" to the beats of a tabla.
“Hold your head up high…you are an Arab,” they chanted.
“I'm here to show solidarity with all the Arab countries that [called for] their freedom before and after Jan. 25,” Mona Prince, an English literature university professor, told Daily News Egypt.
“We will pursue our paths, for ourselves and others,” she added.
The protesters marched to protest in front of the Bahraini embassy across the street and then marched to the Bahraini ambassador's residence nearby.
Some pedestrians cheered the small march as bus and taxi drivers honked their horns to salute them.
Afterwards, the group marched to the other side of Zamalek to protest outside the Libyan embassy on Al-Saleh Ayoub Street.
Bahraini blogger Hussein Youssif told Daily News Egypt that he visited Egypt two weeks ago to take part in the Egyptian revolution.
“We now call for a peaceful succession of power in Bahrain and a constitutionally elected government,” Youssif, also an IT executive, explained.
“The Bahraini revolution has not yet reached the stage of overthrowing the regime,” he added.
