CAIRO: Egyptian police are investigating a complaint filed by the brother-in-law of jailed politician and businessman Hisham Talaat Moustafa, in which he accused Moustafa of beating him, official media reported on Monday. Ihab Mohamed Madi said Moustafa, the ex-chairman of Egypt's biggest listed property developer Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG), kicked and insulted him in the presence of Moustafa's family, state news website egynews.net said. The incident happened while the family was visiting Moustafa in jail during the first week of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, egynews said. Madi refused to back down when the family appealed to him to drop the complaint, saying: "How can I compromise for a person who refused to apologize to me?" egynews said. According to Madi, the clash started when he intervened in an argument between his wife Sahar and Moustafa. Sahar is the only member of Moustafa's family who regularly attends his court hearings. Moustafa was found guilty in 2009 and sentenced to death for his role in the murder of a Lebanese singer in 2008, a trial that gripped the Arab world. The conviction was overturned on appeal and a retrial ordered. His brother took over chairmanship after he was charged.
