CAIRO: Hassan Moustafa had a comfortable election victory Friday to win another four-year term as president of the International Handball Federation. The Egyptian beat his only opponent, Jean Kaiser of Luxembourg, 115-25 in a poll of national federations at their Congress. The 64-year-old Moustafa has been IHF president since 2000, when he became the first sports official from Egypt to lead an international federation. Kaiser, a retired banking executive, campaigned on a platform of modernizing the Swiss-based organization and warning members that handball's Olympics status was threatened by his opponent's continued leadership. Moustafa was involved in a refereeing scandal in qualifying matches for the Beijing Olympics, and has faced allegations of financial irregularities and interfering in the IHF's anti-doping program. IHF members rejected those concerns Friday and also elected Moustafa's close ally, Miguel Roca, the former IHF treasurer from Spain, as his vice president. French official Joel Delplanque was elected secretary general, defeating Peter Muehlematter from Switzerland, a critic of Moustafa. Sandi Sola of Croatia won the poll to be treasurer. -AP
