Police suspected of kidnapping man allegedly tortured by police
Published in Daily News Egypt on 12 - 02 - 2010

CAIRO: A man who is suing police officers he claims tortured him has been "kidnapped and taken to the same police station in which the alleged assault took place.
The Nadeem Center for the Rehabilitation of the Victims of Violence says that Shady Zaghloul was stopped at 6 pm Tuesday by officers from the Sixth of October No. 2 police station outside a vehicle licensing unit. He was on his way to dropping off his wife at her parents' house.
Nadeem reports that when Zaghloul asked why he had been stopped police officers pushed him into a microbus where he was physically assaulted.
The 24-year-old part time law student was then taken to the police station where he was detained and handcuffed, from 8 pm until 6 am the following morning. A charge of drug dealing was brought against Zaghloul. Nadeem maintains that these are trumped up charges.
A court in Sixth of October is currently hearing a case brought by Zaghloul against three police officers from the Sixth of October police station. Zaghloul alleges that in 2007 the officers tortured him while he was in police custody.
In addition, Zaghloul says that he, his wife and then three-month-old daughter were detained in the police station for four days in an attempt to force Zaghloul to withdraw the charges he had brought against the police.
The charges brought against Zaghloul on Wednesday are the second time that he has been accused of drug dealing. He was found innocent of these charges the last time they were brought.
On Wednesday morning Zaghloul was brought before the public prosecution office which renewed his detention in the police station where he says he was tortured for four days, until Saturday.
The public prosecution office also ordered that Zaghloul be sent for forensic examination because of visible injuries to his face and left arm, which he alleges were caused by a police officer and other policemen.
Nadeem warn that during the four days he spends in custody Zaghloul will be subject to "all possible forms of pressure. including torture and mistreatment in an attempt to make him withdraw the charges against the police officers.
