CAIRO: The Australian Embassy in Cairo has allocated LE 58,000 to address child labor issues in Egypt. The money was spent on supplying a new bakery workshop with equipment so it can provide vocational training to children currently working in occupations of a dangerous nature, and with no access to regular academic services. The workshop is a project run under the umbrella of a wider program to address child labor issues managed by the New Horizon Association for Social Development (NHASD), a non-governmental organization. The bakery's produce will be sold to local distributors, and sales revenues will be used to fund further training programs. The Australian embassy is pleased to support the work of NHASD in providing children that are currently working in dangerous occupations, and unable to access regular education services, with vocational training, Australian Ambassador Robert Bowker told Daily News Egypt on Monday at the bakery after installing the new equipment. Bowker presented NHASD Chief of Trustees Nady Kamel with a certificate of achievement to mark the event. Australia s support for this project is part of the embassy s Direct Aid Program (DAP), the ambassador said, adding that DAP is a small grants program which provides development assistance to NGOs in Egypt with a particular focus on addressing the needs of women and children. Other projects funded by the Australian Embassy this year include an antenatal clinic in Sadat City, funding for women s literacy classes in Minya, and a project targeted at raising women's awareness of their legal rights.
