Published in Daily News Egypt on 25 - 06 - 2007

CAIRO: In the wake of the thirty-seventh bird flu case in humans diagnosed in Egypt, the US government has pledged $24 million to help the country fight the deadly virus, the official spokesperson of the Egyptian Ministry of Health, Dr Abd Al Rahman Shahin told The Daily Star Egypt.
The details of the agreement will be discussed today between US embassy officials and the Minister of Health, to be signed next Sunday, senior media advisor at the US embassy Nihal Rizk told The Daily Star Egypt.
The latest bird flu case in humans was reported by the state news agency Mena as that of four-year-old Emad El Daramally, who is believed have been in contact with dead birds, Shahin said.
Emad Mohammed al-Daramalli, from the Upper Egypt province of Qena, was hospitalised with a high fever on Thursday.
Emad is now receiving treatment in Mansheyat Al Bakri Hospital, and he is in a stable condition, Shahin confirmed.
The report said that he was being treated with Tamiflu, and that his condition was stable.
Women and children have borne the brunt of the virus due to their role in taking care of domestic fowl. The government says it is conducting a vigorous campaign to combat the spread of the virus through vaccinations and raising awareness, but cases continue to appear.
Fifteen mortalities have been officially reported in Egypt so far. With agencies
