COFFEE TALK: In denial
Published in Daily News Egypt on 11 - 08 - 2007

Coffee, coffee, coffee, I need coffee, and after a long coffee talk hang up, I decided to share some conversation with you that I had with a friend that can entertain you while you are having your morning coffee.
So eih ba ah, why didn t you call Mohamed back? He's really upset, Noha asked.
Ok, well I was at Mohjito s last night with some friends, I arrived before my party did (very out of character) and as I was munching the snacks and drink I ordered, a young well-dressed guy in his twenties approached me.
He asked to use my phone because his phone battery was low and that he needed to make an urgent call because his friends wouldn t allow him to call his girlfriend, they are watyeen (low) Ahmed said. And you believed that? Noha asked, laughing.
I was embarrassed and since I am a victim of dying phones I totally sympathized and I told him to go ahead.
He also explained to me that he would put his sim card in the phone cause she won t answer a number she doesn't know.
Sure, but stay close I will need to call my friends soon, I replied.
He left his phone with me for safekeeping until he returned, and I stupidly turned my back to give him privacy, which was again out of character, as I am by nature a very curious person.
When he walked off pointing in front of him, I started to worry. But after ten minutes had passed, he was still nowhere to be seen. I decided that s it, I am on candid camera.
Feeling proud of myself for having figured it all out, I started concentrating on my facial expressions; after all I did not want to appear angry or worried on national TV.
I started laughing a lot and looking around for cameras.
Needless to say... he never came back. And it was not candid camera.
Oh my god you are crazy how could you trust him? Noha asked in awe.
Motioning an I don t know with my shoulders, I said, I refuse to allow my accidents to change my mind about people being good-hearted or maybe I am just an idiot!
We both laughed before my ears settled on a conversation close by.
Two young girls were deep in conversation.
Marwa, why are you upset dear? Tania asked her friend.
Her eyes welling up with tears, Marwa replied, I don t know I thought I was happy with Tamer, I really did. I mean he treats me much better that Saed did, and he is more than willing to marry me before the end of the year.
And Tamer is a great catch you know that, Tania said.
Shaking her head, Marwa explained, I know, it s just seeing Saed again last weekend made me realize that I still love him and that is what matters. He has moved on too, I know and seems happy, but I just didn't want to leave him.
What do you plan to do? Tania asked disappointedly.
Marwa sipped her coffee, I love him, maybe I will see him again.
Three young ladies walked in and ordered coffees to go.
Lamia I don t feel like going to Sahel [North Coast] this weekend.
Patting her on the back, she said: It will be OK.
No it won t, I waited all this time, I didn't call him, ignored his existence, if I see him, it will break me.
Their coffee was ready, and as they shut the door behind them, I shut the door on my coffee talk for the day.
