NEW DELHI: India is in shock after three sisters were reportedly raped and murdered as they were walking home from school on February 14 in the latest violence against women case in the South Asian country. “I can't breath. This is shocking,” mother of two young girls Amina told Bikyanews.com on Friday evening. “This country is going downhill for women and girls very fast. I am disgusted at this event and the lack of police response.” She was referring to three girls, ages 5, 9 and 11, who were found raped and murdered on February 16. According to reports, police have yet to launch an investigation into their deaths, instead recording their murders as “accidental.” According to The Daily Beast, “It was only after the people from the girls' remote village staged a protest that blocked a national highway Wednesday did officials look into the matter, leading to a medical investigation that revealed the rape and murder.” The girls' mother was offered one million rupees in compensation, but she reportedly said, “No amount of money is going to bring my girls back." The case follows massive protests in the country earlier this year after an Indian woman was gang-raped and murdered on a bus. The incident led to a global campaign against sexual violence in the country, but activists and women have repeated that nothing of substance is being done to end the upsurge in violence. BN
