A recent International Transparency Organization study found Israel to be the 12th most corrupt country in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported on Monday. With the number one ranking meaning the least corrupt, Israel scored a 6.1 and thus found itself as number 22 from a total of 33 member countries. While countries such as Haiti, Qatar, Chile, Ecuador, Macedonia, and others have improved in recent years, Israel has consistently declined. Denmark, New Zealand, and Singapore were the least corrupt countries. Israel joined the OECD in May 2010 after the organization voted to accept its application for membership. In recent years, Israel has seen several political scandals. Former PM Ehud Olmert was indicted in January 2012 for accepting bribes. Presently, Israel's former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, from the far right ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, is under investigation for allegations of fraud and money laundering. BN
