DUBAI: The Saudi Arabia government announced on Monday that it was to build new dams near the western port city of Jeddah in an effort to ensure the city is not hit by floods during the rainy season. Chairman of the Saudi Geological Survey Zuhair Nawabm told al-Hayat newspaper on Monday that after “many floods were reported in 2009, the Geological Survey has suggested to build dams in the east, of which five locations were selected.” The fear is that without the dams, Jeddah could be a victim of flooding if action is not taken. “The Geological Survey is studying to have more in the northern side of the city,” Nawabm said. The official highlighted that the study was reviewed by environmentalists to make sure it will not harm natural habitats in the proposed areas. In December 2009, heavy rains hit Jeddah and caused massive flooding, leaving more than 500 people killed.
