CAIRO: American citizens living in Egypt were warned by the United States Embassy in the country from a number of bottled water companies. The statement from the embassy said that recent tests on at least 7 companies' bottled water revealed “pollutants” in the water. “The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, according to their website and several Egyptian newspapers, has closed the wells of some local bottled water companies after testing samples that showed the presence of pollutants, especially live protozoa,” the embassy said. Protozoa are a diverse group of unicellular eukaryotic organisms that can cause a wide range of human diseases, including malaria, giardiasis, sleeping sickness, dysentery and other infections. “While the US Embassy cannot confirm this health advisory, we wish to inform the community that until more information is available, it may be prudent to avoid drinking bottled water from these companies,” the statement continued. It said that the the companies in the ministry report have had their wells closed. The Health Ministry listed the following companies to avoid: Alpha, Seway, Hadir, Aqua Delta, Tiba, Aqua Mina and Aqua Sotir.
