Jakarta wants 10,000 tress planted this year

KUALA LUMPUR: In an effort to boost the city's environment, Jakarta is to plant some 10,000 trees as part of the greening of the city.
The Indonesian capital's administration announced on Friday that it would plan 10,000 trees this year alone.
Jakarta Parks and Cemetery Agency head Catharina Suryowati says the administration may add to the 10,000 trees already planned to compensate for trees felled for the construction of two overpasses connecting Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, to Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, and Antasari, South Jakarta, to Blok M, South Jakarta.
“We'll also build a green corridor that will have the kinds of trees that attract birds,” she said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Trees that will be planted include salam or Indonesian bay-leaf tree (Syzygium polyanthum), buni or salamander tree (Antidesma bunius), tanjung or bullet wood (Mimusops elengi), bungur or crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia), trembesi or rain tree (Albizia saman) and flamboyan or flame tree (Delonix regia), according to Catharina.
She said the trees would be planted across five municipalities in the city and in general would be arranged in the form of corridors connecting one tree garden to another.
“We are allocating Rp 500 million (US$52,882) for each of the five municipalities for tree procurement and planting, and each agency at the municipality level also has its own budget,” Catharina said, adding that the trees would be five years old and have trunk diameters of 15-25 centimeters.
