Meet ‘Blade-man', India's less lethal Jack-the-Ripper
Published in Bikya Masr on 01 - 05 - 2012

New Delhi: Indian authorities are on the lookout for ‘Blade-man', a mysterious and elusive assailant who has been terrorizing the eastern Indian state of Bihar and has slashed over 25 youngsters with sharp razor blades over the last few days.
The mystery surrounding the ‘slasher', who has been given the American-super hero like sobriquet, Blade-man has confounded the police even more because two more girls were razor-slashed on Tuesday, a few days after the Bihar police claimed they had arrested two persons in separate areas, Vidyasagar, a 20-year-old college student and one Arun Kumar, who they claimed were the infamous Blade-men.
According to the police in Bihar, in the last fortnight, Blade-man has attacked nearly 26 youngsters, mostly women in the areas like Lodi Katra and Sadar Galli, located in the heart of Patna, the capital of Bihar.
“He has been mostly slashing hands. That is a trend we have seen. The girls who reported the crime, came to police stations with slashed arms,” police sub inspector attached to the Khaje Kallan police station in Patna told Bikyamasr.com.
Khaje Kallan was one of the areas where the Blade-man appears to have treated as a happy hunting ground.
On Sunday alone, Blade-man, who was seen riding a motorcycle, wearing a pair of shorts, ran berserk injuring 8 youths, including seven girls. In her statement to the police Khaje Kallan police, one of Blade-man's victims, a 12-year-old girl named Rukhaiya has said that her assailant was dark skinned and was indiscriminate in his violent slashing.
Earlier, Vidyasagar, also a resident of the Khaje Kallan area had been picked up by the police, who attempted to brand him as ‘Blade-man'. The attacks on the youngsters even with Vidyasagar in detention, has now embarrassed the state police force, which is expected to release the 20-year-old.
Fortunately Blade-man's attacks have not claimed a fatal casualty yet.
Speaking to reporters in Patna, deputy inspector general of police Sunil Kumar said that technology could be the way to grab the man who has terrorized the city.
“We are planning to install hidden cameras to check the activities of the blade man,” the senior police official said.
