NAIROBI: Kenyan mobile operator Orange experienced three hours of downtime on Tuesday early due to a planned system upgrade. Telkom Kenya undertook the system upgrade on Orange Mobile platform from 0000 hrs – 0300 hrs, on Tuesday. This upgrade is aimed at increasing capacity and through put volume of data sent at any given period of time,” said Michael Ghossein, CEO of Orange Kenya. In a statement to newsrooms on Monday 2ndApril, Telkom Kenya CEO Ghossein said that the upgrade will disrupt 2G, 3G and SMS services on the Orange Mobile Network. 2G is second-generation wireless telephone technology used by telecom networks and has been superseded by newer technologies such as 2.5G,2.75G, 3G, and 4G. 3G standards are used for mobile telecommunication and application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, mobile Internetaccess, video calls and mobile TV. “Orange wishes to inform its esteemed customers in Nairobi that we will undertake a system upgrade on our Orange Mobile platform from 0000 hrs – 0300 hrs, Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012…as Orange, we look forward to being of continued service to our customers and any inconvenience caused during this period is highly regretted,” read Ghossein's statement in part.
