LAGOS: Ghana's Vice-President John Dramani Mahama has donated 20 computers and their accessories to the School of Communications Studies at the University of Ghana, to enhance teaching and learning. The computers, which are valued at about 20,000 Ghana cedis, are aimed at strengthening the capacity of the School in the areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Research. The donation was made through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) is in fulfillment of a pledge made by the Vice President when he visited the school during its Homecoming Week celebration, last year. The computers were presented to the school on Thursday by the Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of GIFEC, Kofi Attor. He said the government has a “responsibility to improve ICT and bridge the digital gap between different sectors within the country and globally.” Joseph Maafo Budu, Registrar of the University of Ghana, however, commended the Vice-President for fulfilling his promise and for the kind gesture. He added that the computers “would aid the research activities of the School and improve the country's contribution to the content of internet information.” Organizations that have benefited from the Fund include the Ghana Prisons Service, 39 teacher training colleges, 38 technical training schools and youth training centres. These organizations received computers, scanners and projectors for the purpose of improving the knowledge of trainees in ICT. An alumnus of the School of Communication Studies, Attor, expressed the hope that both lecturers and students of the educational institution would maintain the computers and “use them to improve their research work.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/5O3rI Tags: Computers, Ghana, ICT, University of Ghana Section: Tech, West Africa
