CAIRO: Egypt's former Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa has become an official presidential candidate after Friday, when his campaign announced it had officially collected the 30,000 required signatures from citizens to support his nomination for presidential elections as stipulated by the Egyptian Presidential Elections law. The Supreme Committee for Presidential Elections headed by Judge Farouk Sultan has called on journalists and the media to attend to the headquarters of the Committee and provide coverage Moussa while he was submitting his candidacy documents officially, and submitting the 30,000 voters' recommendations to support him in the process of running for presidency. Moussa becomes the first independent presidential candidate to officially submit documents required for nomination and the fifth official candidate, after he was preceded by Dr. Ahmed Awad of the National Egypt Party, MP Abul-Ezz Al Hariri for the People's Alliance, Hossam Khair Allah for the Democratic Peace Party and Mohammad Fawzi for al-Geel Party. Also expected to run is leading moderate Islamist candidate Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh – who has been tipped the leading frontrunner thus far – along with a number of other popular candidates and at least one woman, Bothaina Kamel. The election is to take place in mid-May with run-offs, if necessary, scheduled for June.
