Sydney (dpa) – Australia on Wednesday promised to investigate the death of a Brazilian student on a Sydney street after police used a Taser gun to subdue him. Police said 21-year-old Roberto Laudisio Curti was resisting arrest early Sunday when they used the Taser and capsicum spray. Security video footage showed up to six police officers chasing a shirtless Laudisio, who was unarmed and suspected of stealing a packet of biscuits from a shop. New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell appointed the state ombudsman to oversee a police inquiry into the death, which is also the subject of a coronial inquiry. “I say to any country, and the citizens of any country, that Australian law is rigorous,” O'Farrell said. “People are treated equally by the justice system, by the policing system, by a range of systems that operate impartially.” There are an estimated 20,000 Brazilian students studying in Australia. Newspapers in Brazil have likened the death to that of Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian who was killed on the London Underground in 2005 by police who believed he was about to detonate a bomb.
