CAIRO: Arabi Abdel Hamid, head of the legal department at Egypt's Suez Company for Petroleum Manufacturing, is holding former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali responsible for an explosion in a refinery, which led to the death of five workers last Wednesday. State-run MENA news agency quoted Hamid as saying that Ghali`s refusal to replace and modernize the equipment of the company and constantly renew them, “although the officials of the company submitted 20 requests to the former finance Minister, during his tenure.” He added that the explosion was a result of “the successive corrupt governments that had been ruling Egypt over the past 30 years,” adding that Boutros Ghali wanted to merge the Suez Company for Petroleum Manufacturing and Nasr Petroleum as a step towards privatizing petroleum purification companies, but the General Petroleum Authority rejected the idea, “so he insisted on refraining from modernizing or replacing the equipment.” He said that the former governments wanted to privatize national companies to “demolish the national industry and economy.” The explosion started when one of the company's containers for separating oils exploded last week.
