CAIRO: Egypt's presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh said this week that “conspiracies” are being made against the presidential elections “to disrupt it through secret deals that seek to produce another Mubarak in the upcoming presidential elections.” He said that he considered that concerns over the presidential elections are “legitimate.” He called on the ruling military junta to ensure holding fair and transparent elections “without the intervention of the army,” and said that the military establishment “should not be lured into politics, because this would pose a threat to Egypt.” Aboul Fotouh warned the military junta of intervention in the presidential elections, and stressed that “the military junta should be neutral during the electoral process. “You should never interfere in the presidential race and you must show respect for the military institution that all Egyptians appreciate and love, and stand at an equal distance from all candidates,” he added. He recommended the semi-parliamentary system for Egypt, rather than a parliamentary or a presidential system for the country. Aboul Fotouh is the leading candidate. As a moderate he has been tapped by many observers as the top hopeful who can bring together the divergent political groups in the country. Candidacy for nominations will open on March 10.
