CAIRO: At least 37 Indonesian nationals have been evacuated from the violence in Syria, the country's foreign ministry said on Thursday. The Indonesians are expected in Jakarta later on Thursday after having been pulled out of Syria, where continuous shelling and killing continues to dominate the Middle East country. The Indonesian embassy in Damascus helped the 18 migrant workers, 17 students and their families leave Syria, the ministry said in the 11th month of a crackdown by Syrian forces on dissent, which has killed thousands of people. Six of the workers were evacuated from conflict areas, two of them from Homs, where the violence has been centred. A previous evacuation effort this month sent home seven Indonesian workers. Some 98 workers remain at the embassy in Damascus awaiting exit permits and work contract settlements. According to a foreign diplomat in Cairo, speaking to Bikyamasr.com on condition of anonymity, the situation in Syria is becoming a top priority, “and getting out country's citizens will continue to be where we are heading at the moment if the violence continues at this rate.” According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 7,200 Syrians have been killed in the 11 month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, including hundreds of children.
