CAIRO: Egypt presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahy began a political tour on Tuesday to promote his electoral program in Cairo, Sabahy's campaign reported. He visited the Socialist Public Union Party and the Egyptian Socialist Party and met with their founders before leaving the capital Cairo, heading to Minya and Assiut in Upper Egypt to spend a week promoting his candidacy. He will take part in public discussions with people in the cities he visits, as organized by his support campaign. The Egyptian ruling military council has said elections for the presidency will begin sometime in the Spring, with dates being changed routinely. Sabahy is a self-proclaimed Nasserist, in regards to late President Gamal Abdel Nasser and his socialist and Arab union program. Sabahy, 57, was a member of Parliament from 2000 to 2005 and was repeatedly arrested at protests that took the side of workers and farmers. He is now the head of the al-Karama party and the Editor-in-chief of its newspaper under the same name.
