CAIRO: Egyptian presidential hopeful Bothaina Kamel was attacked on Friday during an anti-military junta march as it passed through the Hadayek al-Qobbah district of Cairo on its way to the ministry of defense. Reports said Kamel, who was accompanied by a number of media people and activists, was attacked and manhandled when they passed by a residential area chanting against the ruling military council. Kamel was not seriously injured. She denied she was assaulted physically and said on her Twitter account that young men from the area approached her and apologized to her, saying that these people who tried to attack her were “thugs” from outside the area. State-run al-Ahram newspaper reported the mob “hit Kamel with shoes,” which Kamel denied strongly, calling the state-owned and run newspaper “liars.” Not far from Kamel, member of Parliament Mohamed Abu Hamed, who held an empty shell in front of the parliament last week to prove that the ministry of interior used live ammunition against protesters, was also attacked close to the al-Nour mosque in Abbassiya, an area synonymous with pro-military council sentiments. Abu Hamed was attacked by a group of men who chased after him until he took a taxi to escape the angry mob.
