CAIRO: The defense team for former Egypt Interior Minister Habib al-Adly has called for former presidential candidate and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei to testify as a witness for the defense. Lawyer Mohamed el-Gendi called for ElBaradei to testify, arguing that the former IAEA chief could report that the interior ministry had protected him and ensured he could return home safely during the uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak last January and February 2011. ElBaradei, an outspoken critic of the Mubarak regime as well as Egypt's current military rulers, has not yet commented on the calls for him to testify. Adly is charged with killing protesters during the uprising last year. Some 1,000 people were killed in the massive street protests that began on January 25, 2011, and lasted until February 11, when then-Vice-President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak was stepping down as president and the military was taking power.
