ALGIERS: Moroccan mobile operator Maroc Telecom announced on Tuesday that it had begun deployment of an international high speed fiber optic cable between the North African country and Spain. The French Vivendi Universal Group company, also added that the new cable would be ready for use as early as March. Le Matin reported that the telecom's $16 million cable linking Asilah with Rota, Spain, is being created by Alcatel-Lucent's Alcatel Submarine Networks unit and CanaLink. The cable should enable a better connection to Africa and increase the overall capacity of Internet capabilities in the country and across the continent. The company said that the 187 kilometer cable will initially have a capacity of some 80 gigabites, with the ability to upgrade to 1.28 terabits. “The goal of the new cable is to enable Maroc Telecom to add more services and increase the base that we already have by opening up the capacity for us to expand,” said the company in a statement to Bikyamasr.com on Tuesday. The goal is to create a new base for international business, call centers and technology laboratories.
