CAIRO: Leading Egyptian opposition figure Ayman Nour, the leader of the al-Ghad el-Thawra Party, and a potential presidential candidate, said that his party is calling for a march that includes a number of political forces and activists on Saturday, New Years Eve, towards the All Saints Church in Alexandria to commemorate the death of 21 Coptic Christians and to show solidarity with the “martyrs of the church” and in “memory of the church bombing.” The attack last year occurred as hundreds of Coptic Christians were exiting the church in Egypt's second largest city and began a turbulent year for Egypt. Egyptian activists and Christians have accused the security forces in Alexandria of being behind the attack. Nour stressed that his party supports the march and calls for it along with the political and national movements, pointing out that this march “aims at adding this crime to the record of crimes committed by the former regime led by ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his minister of interior Habib Al Adli.” He demanded holding them accountable for the bombing and to honor those killed as “martyrs of the revolution.” Last September, a group of human rights lawyers and the Church of All Saints in Alexandria filed a lawsuit against the Egyptian cabinet for the slowness of the investigation into the church bombing on New Year's Eve. The lawsuit was filed against former Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and the former Minister of Interior Mansour el-Essawy and General Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud. An investigation into the incident had been started by the former government, but no official results were announced at the time the regime was toppled last January. A car bomb exploded outside the entrance of the church targeting worshipers, who were on their way out, killing 21 and injuring over 100.
