Ankara (dpa) – Turkish warplanes have killed at least 20 people in an airstrike on the border with Iraq, a Turkish news agency reported Thursday, quoting a provincial governor. The overnight airstrike seemed to have been aimed at suspected Kurdish guerrillas infiltrating into Turkey, but locals told the Dogan News Agency that the victims were smugglers carrying diesel fuel on mules. The governor of Sirnak province said more than 20 people had been killed in the airstrike, which took place near the Turkish village of Uludere, Dogan reported. The bombardment began at 11pm (2100 GMT) on Wednesday, after Turkish unmanned drones and thermal cameras detected a large group of people on the Iraqi side of the border, the agency wrote. The Turkish armed forces gave no initial confirmation or reaction to the reports. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/qmRre Tags: Airstrikes, Border, Turkey Section: Europe, Iraq, Latest News
