CAIRO: An Egyptian human rights organization has filed a lawsuit against retired general and military junta advisor Abdel Moneim Kato for “inciting violence.” The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) said in a press conference that a joint lawsuit was filed against Kato for his numerous comments they believe are inciting “libel and slander, and hate speech against protesters.” The first court session will be held on February 1, ANHRI said in a statement. Kato has come under fire recently for his firebrand comments against protesters who have been facing massive crackdowns from the military. Earlier this month, as the military attacked and killed protesters in downtown Cairo, Kato questioned why reporters were concerned about a “bunch of kids who should be burned in Hitler's ovens.” Potential presidential candidate and human rights defender Mohamed ElBaradei condemned the statement, saying that the general should be in prison and not in power. He wrote on his personal Twitter account, where almost half a million people follow him on the micro-blogging site, saying that the general's “kind” should be sent to jail. Kato also blamed the media for “hanging on to the crust of the issue rather than the important things,” referring to their interest in the death toll instead of the burning of the Scientific Institute that was set ablaze by Molotov cocktails. told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that the woman, whose blue bra has quickly become a symbol of military aggression, “had been insulting the army through a megaphone” before she was attacked by soldiers, stripped and beaten ruthlessly. The video of her being beaten by soldiers quickly went viral on social networking sites and created the impetus for a number of women's rights marches across the country. “Insulting” the armed forces has become a red line for the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), who have already sentenced thousands of civilians in military trials over such action, including blogger Maikel Nabil, who has been in jail over such comments earlier this year. He then went on to justify that the Geneva Conventions give the Egyptian military to shoot protesters, angering activists further.
