Chile got back into contention for the 2014 World Cup after a 2-0 victory over Paraguay. Uruguay crushed Chile in the previous fixture so a win in front of their home crowd was vital to their campaign. Paraguay had just recorded a win against Ecuador and were hoping to add a second consecutive victory. Led up front by a three-headed attack of Alexis Sanchez, Humberto Suazo, and Eduardo Vargas, El Rojo was clearly intending to take the game right at the visitors. In the 27th Chile went ahead from a corner kick by Matias Fernandez. Pablo Contreras raised up and got his head on the ball which gave the home side the advantage they were looking for all game. If Contreras did not latch onto it fellow defender Marcos Gonzalez also looked in position to give Chile the lead. Both players looked more determined than their Paraguayan markers to reach the ball. In the 86th Chile doubled the lead after a cruel deflection. Udinese midfielder Mauricio Isla played in a low ball into the box which was cleared out by the Paraguay defense. Unfortunately for them it rolled to the feet of Matias Campos. After taking his time to control the ball he beamed in a shot which bounced off a defender and floated over goalkeeper Diego Barreto. Paraguay came close to scoring and should consider themselves quite unlucky on two occasions. Both times from set pieces Chile had to clear the ball off the line after frantic defending in front of the goal mouth. In the first instance Chile keeper Claudio Bravo just got grasp of the ball after several Paraguayan attempts on goal. The second close call came in similar fashion yet a last gasp clearance by Chile preserved the clean sheet.
